Belle’s Lady Tigers sting St. Elizabeth

Opening their season last week in the Eugene Girls Basketball Tournament, Evin Farris’ Belle Lady Tigers looked to start it off on a winning note.

Splitting pool play defeating Tuscumbia and falling to Eugene, Farris’ Lady Tigers found themselves playing for third-place hardware Saturday afternoon in Eugene against St. Elizabeth’s Lady Hornets.

Averaging just a shade under 10 points a quarter against St. Elizabeth, Belle left Eugene with a 2-1 record along with third-place hardware following their 39-30 victory over the Lady Hornets.

Able to have her way in the paint, Halle Smith led the Lady Tigers and all scorers with a game-high 24 points.

Olivia Sanders was next in the scoring department with seven points against the Lady Hornets.

Faith Geick and Erin Schalk each tallied four points against St. Elizabeth to round out Belle’s scoring.

Last Wednesday, Belle took on the host Lady Eagles with a spot in the Eugene Tournament championship game on the line.

Tied at 11-11 after one quarter, Belle was outscored 33-18 over the second and third quarters by Eugene before falling 56-39 to the host Lady Eagles.

Smith led Belle and all scorers with a game-high 16 points putting in nine of those in the second half.

Sanders also reached double figures for Farris’ Lady Tigers scoring seven of her 10 points in the first half.

Netting six of her eight points in the first quarter, Schalk just missed making it three Lady Tigers in double figures.

Senior Grace Busch rounded out Belle’s scoring against Eugene with five points.

Eugene advanced to the championship game of their own tournament against Fatima.

They settled for second place after the Lady Comets handed them a 49-46 loss in double overtime.

Opening the Eugene Tournament and their season last Tuesday night, Belle’s Lady Tigers looked to tame Tuscumbia’s Lady Lions.

Doubling up Tuscumbia 20-10 in the first half, Farris’ Belle squad posted their first notch in the win column with a 47-35 victory.

Smith led Belle with a team-high 21 points while Sanders just missed double digits with eight points.

Busch and Geick were right behind Sanders with seven points each in addition to three first-quarter points from Schalk.

Lauren Prigge rounded out Belle’s scoring with a third-quarter free throw for one point.

Monday night in their home opener against Newburg, Belle suffered a 60-33 loss at the hand of the Lady Wolves in spite of a game-high 22 points from Smith.

BHS will return to action tomorrow (Thursday) on the road at Iberia against the Lady Rangers.
