Belle’s Lady Tigers, Vienna’s Eagles compete in tournament action

WESTPHALIA — Whether is was in Mokane or Westphalia last week, two Maries County basketball teams competed in their respective tournaments.

Up at South Callaway High School in Mokane, Greg Koetting’s Vienna Eagles competed in the South Callaway Boys Tournament while Evin Farris’ Belle Lady Tigers were at Fatima High School in Westphalia taking part in the Comet Classic Basketball Tournament.

Falling 52-25 in first-round action against St. James, Belle then dropped a 50-35 decision to the host Lady Comets.

Looking to salvage a win in Westphalia last Thursday, Farris’ Lady Tigers took on Iberia’s Lady Rangers in the seventh-place game.

Trailing 8-0 early in the first quarter, Belle battled back to take an 18-17 lead at halftime before going on to a 53-48 victory.

Halle Smith finished with a game-high 26 points.

Senior Grace Busch saved her two points for the fourth quarter on a pair of free throws keeping the Lady Tigers in the lead.

Up in Mokane, Greg Koetting’s Vienna Eagles fell 70-47 last week in first-round action against New Haven led by 12 points from Layne Hogshooter.

Facing the host Bulldogs in the consolation semifinals, Vienna bounced back with a 66-57 victory over South Callaway behind 15 points each from Bayrd VanScoy and Hogshooter.

Landon Parmeley also reached double figures with 12 points.

On a date yet to be determined, Vienna will face Calvary Lutheran’s Lions for consolation hardware at South Callaway.
