Throughout the day on Saturday, March 14, Bland’s eighth-grade Lady Bear volleyball team will compete against nine other teams in the annual Owensville 8th Grade Volleyball Tournament at Owensville High School..

Those 10 teams will be split into two pools of five for pool play beginning Saturday morning at 8 a.m., on two courts side-by-side at OHS.

Pool ‘A’ will consist of the Lady Bears, Owensville, Sullivan, St. James and Washington.

Teams placed in Pool ‘B’ will include Union, Hermann, New Haven, St. Clair and Pacific.

In pool volleyball, each match will have two sets to 25 starting with a tie score at 5-5.

Bland will have pool matches against Owensville at 9:30 a.m., Washington at 11 a.m., St. James at 1:15 p.m., and Sullivan at 2:45 p.m.

In their first pool match against Owensville, Brian Kaestner’s Lady Bears will look for their first win in as two tries against the Dutchgirls. OMS defeated Bland in three sets during their second match of the young season two weeks ago at Owensville Elementary School.

With the top two teams advancing out of each pool to the championship bracket, those semifinal matches will start at 3:30 p.m., followed by the first and third-place matches at 4:30 p.m. Unlike pool play, bracket matches will be played the best two out of three games rally scored.

While their eighth-grade counterparts are in Owensville on Saturday, Bland’s seventh-grade Lady Bears will also be competing in tournament action.

Only for them, it will be down in Warhawk country at the Bourbon 7th Grade Girls Volleyball Tournament.

It will be a five-team round-robin tournament featuring Steelville’s Lady Cardinals, Cuba’s Lady Wildcats, St. James’ Lady Tigers, the host Lady Warhawks and the Lady Bears.

Bland will begin their portion of the tournament at 9:15 a.m., facing Cuba at Bourbon Middle School.

Sweeping Cuba in two sets last Thursday, the Lady Bears will look for their second win in as many tries over their Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) foes.

Continuing the tournament at approximately 10 a.m., Bland will face another GVC opponent in the Lady Cardinals from Steelville.

Resuming play at 11:30 a.m., Bland will face the host Warhawks for the second time in three days after hosting Bourbon Thursday night at Bland Middle School.

Concluding their portion of pool play at 1:45, Bland will face St. James in a Highway B bragging rights match of sorts.

If Bland has one of the two best records after pool play, they will compete for the tournament championship in Bourbon at approximately 4 p.m., in Crawford County.

Fresh off their two-set win over Cuba, Bland hosted Dixon’s Lady Bulldogs Friday night in a Highway 28 volleyball showdown.

Behind the serving of Tajel McDaniel and Victoria Busch, Bland won the seventh-grade match in two sets 25-5 and 25-13.

Going for a sweep on the night, Bland’s eighth-grade Lady Bears saw an 18-12 lead in game one turn into a loss in two sets, 25-19 and 25-9.

Looking to snap a three-match losing streak, the eighth-grade Lady Bears will face Bourbon tomorrow (Thursday) at Bland Middle School.
