Byrd’s Vienna softball Eagles claim tournament title at Richland

Coming off a 10-3 loss to Russellville last Thursday, Mick Byrd’s Vienna Eagle softball team went into Saturday’s Richland Tournament looking for yet another tournament title from Bear country.

Facing Cuba, Crocker and Richland, Vienna outscored their opponents 28-2 helping them leave Pulaski County with tournament championship hardware from Richland.

Already with two wins over Cuba, Vienna went for a third victory over the Lady Wildcats in the opening game Saturday from Richland.

Behind a three-hit shutout from Marsie Messersmith, Vienna went on to post a 3-0 victory in their tournament opener at Richland.

Kadence George had two hits followed by a hit and a RBI each from Kayla Hertzing, Karissa Feeler and Gabby Wilkinson.

Nora Garro also scored a run in the win.

Later in the day, Vienna took on Crocker who is also a MSHSAA Class 1, District 2 opponent.

This time, Alicia Long was the winning pitcher with seven strikeouts while allowing three hits and one walk pitching six innings.

Long had more than enough run support from Vienna during their 9-1 victory over Crocker.

Abrea Simmons struck out the side in the seventh inning for the Eagles.

Feeler led Vienna with a triple, two doubles and three RBIs. Hertzing also had a triple and two singles.

Wilkinson made it a triple trio for Vienna with a 3-bagger, a single and four RBIs.

Jada Kleffner added a two hits and a RBI while Kyleigh Logan also chipped in two runs scored and a stolen base.

Saving their offense for last, Vienna reached double digits against Richland in a 16-1 victory clinching their latest tournament title.

Kleffner, Wilkinson and Feeler each had two hits and at least one RBI.

Wilkinson finished with two RBIs while Feeler added two stolen bases.

Allison Buschmann added a base hit for the Eagles against Richland.

Scoring runs for Vienna against the Lady Bears were Alexi Struemph (2), Nora Garro, Logan, Tori Schulte, Olivia Hagan, Alayna Patton and Jaelee Stricklan.

Messersmith pitched the first two innings against Richland giving up an unearned run and three walks in addition to four strikeouts.

Simmons pitched the a scoreless third inning giving up no hits and allowing a walk.

Buschmann led off the bottom of the third inning with a hard single to center field. She advanced to second base on a wild pitch before scoring the game-ending run on a double to left-center field by Kleffner.

Vienna improved to 11-1 on the season after their three wins in Richland.
