The positive sales tax and use tax trend in Maries County continues.
When the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic swept through the United States in early 2020, sales tax revenue plummeted and state, county, and city government officials were alarmed revenue would fall and essential services government provides may have to be reduced.
However, in Maries County local sales tax revenues only declined in January and February and in the following seven months, held its own compared to 2019 and in some months significant increases were experienced.
County officials think the increase in revenue is due to more local shopping because of the coronavirus; people don’t want to go to a busy store in another town, so they shop locally. This has been beneficial to some local retail establishments that have had more customers and in some cases record sales. The increase in local shopping also has been advantageous for local government entities which received more sales tax revenue.
Revenue received during September in Maries County was up for all three of the county’s half-cent sales taxes as well as for the law enforcement sales tax. In September 2020, one half-cent sales tax brought in $38,539.07 compared to 2019 when the same sales tax generated $31,255.47 in revenue. In September the law enforcement sales tax brought in $12,794.84 compared to 2019 when the sales tax generated revenue of $10,376.67.
Thus far in 2020, Maries County has received $236,422.69 from one of the three half-cent sales taxes. This is a five percent increase over the total received in 2019 for the same period of time when sales tax revenues for the first three quarters totaled $224,235.38 from one sales tax. The law enforcement sales tax for the first three quarters of the year has brought in total revenues of $78,296.46, compared to 2019 when it generated $74,021.38 for the sheriff’s department.
The county’s use tax continues to be up 50 percent from 2019 numbers as for the first three quarters of 2020 the county has received $157,800.48 in revenues. This compares to the same period of time in 2019 when the total was $79,072.26.
