James to once again serve as Vienna mayor

Posted

Former mayor and current alderman Tyler “TC” James has decided once again to become the Mayor of Vienna.

James reported this at the February council meeting. No one filed for the mayor’s position but two people filed for the one north ward council seat. South Ward Alderwoman Brenda Davis has been acting as mayor in the absence of one since Mayor Jeremy Smith moved away and created the vacancy. Davis told James she will appoint him as mayor, and he won’t need to run for reelection until 2023.

As there are two people who want to be an alderperson for the north ward, James’s position on the council is now open, making two positions available. Current North Ward Alderwoman Reva Hutchison wants to continue to serve the city in that capacity. Rita Juergens also filed for the north ward position.

Davis proposed that Hutchison step down from her seat and let Juergens take it as it is for four years, which is what Juergens signed up for. Then, Hutchison can take the position James is vacating to become mayor and three years remain on that council position. Hutchison said this is fine with her.

“We’re just trying to fill the spots on the council,” James said. Davis added this way the city will not have to pay for an election.

“There’s no reason to spend taxpayer’s money if we don’t need to,” she said.
