John Walter “Johnny” Laughlin, 67, Vienna, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2020, in Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis.

He was born Aug. 10, 1952, to James Orville and Ida Gladys (Nickels) Laughlin, at Waynesville.

As a youth, Johnny attended and was baptized at Mt. Gibson Baptist Church in Waynesville. At the time of his passing, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Vienna. Johnny served in the National Guard and was a former member of the Masonic Lodge. He worked at Licking Sale Barn, South Central Regional Stockyard of Vienna, Interstate Regional Livestock Market in Cuba and as a stock contractor. In his earlier years, he participated in area horse shows and led the “all-day” ride at Big Piney Trail Ride. Along with his family, Johnny started and ran Show-Me Timed Event Challenge at the arena on their farm. He also provided cattle for rodeos, jackpots and benefits all over the state of Missouri and neighboring states.

He was preceded in death by parents, James and Gladys; and brother, Joe Laughlin.

He is survived by sons, Justin Laughlin of Waynesville and Jake Laughlin and wife Saige of Lone Jack; daughter, Josie Spurgin and husband Scott of Eminence; brother, Jerry Laughlin and wife Betty of Waynesville; sisters, Joyce Yelton and husband Mike of Washington, Janell Napier and husband Dave of Eminence and Jamie Hicks of Camdenton; and one grandson.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Aug. 2, at Bar X in Vienna. Family and friends will gather around the arena beginning at 1 p.m. The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Memorial contributions suggested to Missouri High School Rodeo, Johnny Laughlin Scholarship Fund, Eugene.
