Lena LaVaughn Elrod, 82, passed away Friday, Nov. 13, 2020, in Capital Region Medical Center, Jefferson City.
She was born Oct. 5, 1938, to Allen Boney Elrod and Zillah Martha Backues Elrod, at the Century Farm east of Vienna, the original “Bent Elrod Homestead.”
She was united in marriage to Marvin William Zimmer, May 21, 1960, at Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Vienna by the late Guido Nardoni.
Lena attended Bend School, Paydown School and was a 1955 graduate of Belle High School. She was a member of Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Vienna where she was active in many church organizations: the Visitation School Board, the Visitation Home and School Association, served three terms of three years each on the Visitation Church Parish Council, two years on the Visitation Church Window Restoration Committee and two years on the Visitation Church 150th Anniversary Committee. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Jane Randolph Jefferson Chapter in Jefferson City and the Historical Society of Maries County, where she served for 20 years as treasurer and also on the committee to compile and publish Volume One, Two and Three of the Maries County History books.
She was preceded in death by parents, Allen and Zillah; brothers, Leonard Allen Elrod and Winfred Allen Elrod and wife Venita; sister, Mildred Louise Murdock and husband John; parents-in-law, William and Alvina Zimmer; brothers-in-law, Edward Zimmer, Andrew Zimmer and wife Terry and Joseph Reichel; and sister-in-law, Mildred Honse and husband Donald.
She is survived by husband, Marvin, of the home; sons, David Allen Zimmer of Denver, Colo., and Scott William Zimmer of Westphalia; brother, Thomas Allen Elrod Sr. and wife Ann of Belle; sisters-in-law, Billie Elrod of Vienna, Marion Zimmer of Bridgeton, Susan Bassett and husband Ken of St. Robert, Lorraine Stuecken and husband Roger and Mary Reichel, all of Freeburg; and brother-in-law, Urban Zimmer and wife Betty of Westphalia.
Private graveside services were held Thursday, Nov. 19, in Elrod Cemetery (now known as Union Hill Cemetery), near Vienna, with Deacon Michael Brooks officiating. A Celebration of the Eucharist Rite of Christian Burial is planned at a later date.
