During the July Maries R-1 School Board meeting, Coach Nicholas Lovell was hired as the Vienna High School Baseball Coach for the 2019-2020 school year. Coach Lovell also will be teaching physical education and will be preforming the duties of Maries R-1 Athletic Director.

Coach Lovell is originally from Russellville, MO where he attended high school and played baseball. After graduation he attended college at North Central Missouri College for a year then transferred to Lincoln University where he played baseball on scholarship for the Blue Tigers.  Mr. Lovell graduated in 2016 with a BS in criminal justice, making the Dean’s List for academics each semester.

After graduation, Coach Lovell worked for Sheriff Chris Heitman and the Maries County Sheriff’s Office for a year. Lovell also worked for MoDOT traveling Missouri collecting data for the transportation planning department. During this time, Coach Lovell volunteered some of his time coaching youth baseball as well as helping Coach Tyler Shalbot within the Vienna Eagles Baseball program.

Maries R-1 Superintendent Mark Parker said when getting to know Coach Lovell people will find that he is a huge baseball fan in general and is a big fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He loves baseball, has played baseball his entire life, and said he still tries to play when he can. He has played and been around the game at many different levels and through experience and observation, knows what it takes as a player to play at the college and professional levels. He loves this area of Missouri as he enjoys exercising, hunting, hiking, camping, and most of all being a father.

When asking him about this opportunity, Coach Lovell said, “I am very blessed to have the opportunity to take over such a fundamentally sound and exciting baseball program.  Coach Shalbot worked incredibly hard to build such a successful and structured club. I look forward to continuing this work and continue giving this school and community the high quality baseball they have become used to seeing. As a coach you can expect the same passion, dedication, and commitment to excellence that Coach Shalbot coached with and brought to the community. I am very excited to get to know all of my players and start this new opportunity.”

Superintendent Parker said because Lovell does not have an academic teaching degree, he will work with DESE and get the certifications he needs. Parker commented he likes the enthusiasm Lovell will bring to his new position at Maries R-1 and the school members agreed with him.
