Gavin Weathers (right, middle) once again stands atop the medal podium as a state champion in the Class 1 Boys Discus during the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 1-2 Track and Field Championships held over the weekend at Jefferson City High School’s Adkins Stadium and Licklider Track complex. Winning the event with a throw of 165 feet, 10 inches, this marked Gavin’s second straight state title. Also placing in the top eight earning All-State honors with Weathers were (at right, from left) Meadville’s Jacob Tsikoyak, Lakeland’s Garrett Strange, Lutheran Kansas City’s Jayden Anderson, St. Elizabeth’s Everett Schaffer, Jasper’s William Hale, Knox County’s Logan Miller and Midway’s Joshua Yahnig.

JEFFERSON CITY — For Belle’s Susie Moman and several members of the Vienna Eagle track and field team, their goal was a top-eight finish and All-State honors during the Class 1-2 Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Track and Field Championships held at Jefferson City High School’s Adkins Stadium.
First up Friday morning was Belle Lady Tiger sophomore Susie Moman competing in the Class 2 Girls Javelin.
Posting a throw of 111 feet, 10 inches in her first of three preliminary throws, Moman added to her school record and entered the nine-man finals in seventh place.
In spite of being overtaken by Summit Christian Academy’s Rylee Lunn for seventh place during the finals, Moman held on to eighth place with her earlier throw carrying over to the finals.
“I was extremely happy to finish eighth place because I was the only sophomore to make it into the finals,” Moman said.
Injuring her thumb during the javelin, Moman then competed in the Class 2 girls discus.
Posting her best throw of 89-05 in the preliminaries, Moman finished her sophomore season with a 16th-place finish in the state in the Class 2 girls discus.
Vienna’s weekend at the MSHSAA Class 1-2 Track and Field Championships also began Friday morning in the Class 1 boys 110-meter hurdles.
Finishing sixth in his preliminary heat with a time of 17.70, Eagle sophomore Mike Andrews missed the finals by over a second placing 12th overall in the event.
Two hours after Andrews competed in the 110m hurdles, junior thrower Gavin Weathers got his first of two chances at a state medal in the Class 1 boys shot put.
Seeded 10th coming in to the event, Weathers popped a mark of 46-05.75 on his second throw of the preliminary round.
That put him in third place going into the nine-man finals.
Even though he wasn’t able to improve on that distance in the finals, Weathers stayed in third place giving him a Friday afternoon bronze medal.
“I just went out there and gave it everything I had,” Weathers said. “Even though I came in seeded 10th, I just told myself that I was going to do my best and see what happened.”
Missing out on the finals earlier in the 110m hurdles, Andrews got another shot at a state medal in the Class 1 Boys 300-meter hurdles.
Again placing sixth in his preliminary heat in a time of 43.73, Andrews placed 11th overall missing the top eight and the finals by .31 hundredths of a second.
Day two Saturday for the Eagles was highlighted by competition in four field events along with the Class 1 Boys 4x800-meter relay.
Looking to add to his third-place medal in the shot put, Weather opened day two for Vienna’s Eagles defending his state championship in the Class 1 Boys Discus.
Fouling his first attempt, Weather posted a mark of 163-10 that would’ve have won him another state title.
However, he added two feet to that distance on his second throw of the finals posting a winning mark of 165-10.
Making the finals of the Class 1 Girls Javelin, Vienna freshman Kadence George just missed the top eight and a state medal with a ninth-place throw of 105-03.
Placing 12th in the Class 1 Boys 4x800-meter relay was the Vienna team of Jehoshua Casey, Wyatt Coons, Timmy Schwartze and Caleb Horman.
Logan Agan (11th, 141-07 and Gavin Stricklan (15th, 133-03) competed for Vienna in the Class 1 Boys Javelin.
Nathan Kleffner also posted a leap of 18-05.25 good for 14th in the Class 1 Boys Long Jump.
