VIENNA — It’s a busy election year. The next election is the Aug. 4 primary with many interesting ballot issues to vote on.

Maries County citizens who are not registered to vote still have time to do so. The last day to register to vote in the August primary is July 8. Citizens can register to vote at the Maries County Clerk’s Office in the courthouse in Vienna. If a citizen is not able to go to the clerk’s office, registration can be done online at the Missouri Secretary of State’s Office website. Or, call the county clerk’s office (422-3388) and request to be registered and the clerk’s office will mail a form to be filled out and returned. It must be postmarked July 8 or before to be entered for the August primary election.

The Maries County Clerk’s Office also has been assisting voters with absentee balloting since it opened for the primary election on June 23. The last day to mail out absentee ballots is July 22, and the last day to vote absentee in the county clerk’s office is Aug. 3, the day before the primary election. Voters who are hesitant to make the trip to their polling site during the coronavirus pandemic are encouraged to vote absentee.

At the primary election, voters must choose one ballot to vote. The selection includes ballots for Republican Party, Democratic Party, Libertarian, Green Party, and Constitutional Party.

In Maries County, there is one local contested race on the Republican ballot as incumbent Eastern District Commissioner Doug Drewel, Bland, is being challenged for the job by Mike Moreland, St. James.

There is one Constitutional Amendment on the primary election ballot. Constitutional Amendment No. 2 was proposed by initiative petition and it asks voters to adopt Medicare Expansion for persons 19 to 64 years old with income at or below 133 percent of the federal poverty level.

Voting is a not only a constitutional right in the US democracy; it is also a privilege that should be respected and used whenever possible. Maries County Clerk Rhonda Rodgers always encourages all county registered voters to exercise their right and vote.

The last day to register to vote in the November general election is Oct. 7.
