Monday’s rainfall ends long August dry spell

When it rained 0.13 inches on Saturday, August 29, in Maries County it had been 19 days since rainfall had been recorded at the National Weather Service station at the Rolla National Airport at Vichy. Previously, the last rainfall recorded was 0.02 inches on Aug. 10.

It’s been a dry August and the rainfall received on Saturday barely settled the dust but temperatures cooled down somewhat. The following are some weather statistics for the last days of August in Maries County as reported by the National Weather Service at the Vichy location.

The dry spell was thoroughly broken on Monday, Aug. 31 when a storm literally blew into the area, downing trees and other disruptions as it brought much needed rainfall. The weather service reported 1.19 inches of rainfall at Vichy bringing the August total to 1.88 inches.

The high temperature on Monday was 78 (record 100 in 2000) and the low was 64 (record 46 in 1903).

On Sunday, August 30, the weather service had recorded only 0.69 inches of rainfall during the month of August. It has rained 8.31 inches since June 1, 2020, and 31.30 inches since January 1, 2020.

Also on Aug. 30, the high temperature for the day was 80 (record 99 degree in 1901) and the low temperature for the day was 63 (record 50 in 2009). There was no rainfall reported for the day (record 1.13 in 2019).

On Aug. 29, the weather service reported the high temperature of 81 (record 100 in 1901) and minimum temperature of 64 (record 49 in 1965). Precipitation on Aug. 29 was 0.13 inches (record 1.57 in 1975).

On Aug. 28, the high temperature was 89 (record 98 in 1898) and low was 71 (record 50 in 1971). Precipitation was 0 (record 1.59 in 1974).

On Aug. 27, the high temperature was 83 (record 98 in 1901) and the low was 71 (record 51 in 1971). No rainfall was recorded for last Thursday (record 2.99 in 1951).

On Aug. 26, the high temperature recorded at Vichy was 91 (record 100 in 1897) and low temperature was 68 (record 50 in 2015). No rainfall was recorded (record 2.44 in 2006)
