A $5,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for skinning dogs, a ghastly crime that occurred last week in Maries County near Paydown.

The reward is offered by Guardians of Rescue, a group of people who share a love for animals.

The Maries County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate this horrendous crime. Three dogs were severely injured when they were, all on the same date. The young dogs located at or near MCR 319 off of Highway 42 East, had portions of their hide skinned off them. The dogs had very serious injuries and a vet euthanized one animal and another dog died from the injuries.

Sheriff Chris Heitman said, “It was terrible” about the injuries these dogs received. He said it was hard to look at the dogs and to hear their cries and howls. They were in a lot of pain.

He believes it was the work of a human with a knife as they were precision cuts.

The sheriff’s office has followed up on some leads and the investigation continues. The sheriff said he hopes the $5,000 reward will bring someone forward who has information about this grisly crime.
