R-1 improvements begin

VIENNA — After receiving overwhelming voter approval for its no tax increase bond issue to finance safety, security and physical improvements to Maries R-1 School District facilities, the administration and school board are wanting to get started on some of those projects.

During discussion at the school board’s recent reorganizational meeting, Superintendent Mark Parker said because the election was pushed back to June from April, it has pushed back the time this summer they initially had hoped to get started on some of the projects. They will need drawings and plans, surveying, bids, paperwork and the workforce will have to be mobilized. He thinks August or September is the earliest some of the projects can begin. Maybe the safety improvements to school entrances can be done sooner, Parker said, as he wants to get those projects started right away. Measuring was done and photos were taken.

With the in-house projects, they plan to begin turning the old library into the band room. Already the carpet in the old library was pulled up and the glue removed. They plan to make the band room soundproof. The project is being priced out now and they hope to begin soon. It may be ready for when Mr. Spiller has his band summer camp.

Board member Mike Kleffner asked about the locker rooms. Parker said the weight room will be moved to the old band room and the new band room will be in the old library.

The blocks at the old preschool building site need to be hauled off.
