Rain, sleet, snow disrupt area travel; weather cited in fatal U.S. 63 crash

A winter storm which produced rain, sleet and snowfall across the region ranging from a ground covering up to five inches was responsible for numerous slide-offs and at least one fatality on U.S. 63 in Maries County.

Schools were not in session in Owensville on Friday as rain turned into sleet and later snowfall.

Shortly after 10 a.m. Feb. 16, weather conditions turned deadly in Maries County as a Vienna teenager died and another was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 63 at Maries Road 209 near the Osage County line.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol report, the crash occurred at 10:12 a.m. when a northbound 2004 Chrysler Sebring driven by Karleigh D. Briscoe, 18, lost control on the ice-covered road and over-corrected. The vehicle traveled into the southbound lane where a 2007 Dodge Ram driven by Michael R. Vanmeter, 65, also of Vienna, struck it. The Sebring overturned and ejected passenger Dylan Limbach, 19, before coming to a rest off the roadway.

Emergency services transported Limbach to Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City where a doctor pronounced him deceased at 12:34 p.m. while Briscoe was transported to University Hospital in Columbia with serious injuries. Both vehicles sustained total damage.

Owensville Fire Department volunteers responded to multiple calls for service Friday morning due to slick roads.

Firemen assisted with traffic control on U.S. Highway 50 east of Mt. Sterling for a jack-knifed tractor-trailer unit which slid off the road traveling west. No injuries reported but crews remained on scene to mitigate a diesel fuel leak as Kendalls Towing and Recovery removed the semi. Another motorist lost control of their car while approaching the scene due to inattentive driving and skidded into the eastbound ditch.

Crews also responded to several slide offs north and south of Owensville on Highway 19. No injuries were reported and firemen helped several of the motorists get their vehicles back on the road safely, according to a fire department report.
