Rowden releases Herron from jail

Following an extended stay in the Maries County Jail, on Tuesday Judge Kerry Rowden gave Steve Herron an OR bond with conditions and told him he is free to go.

Judge Rowden said he’s been in jail a long time on a misdemeanor charge. Sheriff Chris Heitman reported Herron, 65, Belle, has been in the county jail since Aug. 15, 2019.

His felony charge had been dismissed because he was committed to the Missouri Department of Mental Health because of incompetency to proceed. Maries County Prosecuting Attorney Anthony “Tony” Skouby said the department of mental health has not come to get him and he suggested they do a subpoena to the department to be in court on March 10.

Judge Rowden told this to Herron, saying they were waiting for the department of mental health to come. He gave him an OR bond with conditions. “You can’t drive a car,” the judge told him, saying if he violates this condition and drives, he will come back to jail. Also, “You can’t be drinking alcohol. Do you think you can not drink?” the judge asked him and Herron said, “I suppose so.” Judge Rowden told him he can’t drink in his house or anywhere.

He was asked if he is in contact with his daughter, Brittany, and he said he talked to her a couple of weeks ago. Herron said her mom can come get him.

The judge asked him about his bank account and said he needs to be sure it is secure so others don’t have access to his account.

Skouby said, “No drugs.” Judge Rowden told him if they get a call from Belle saying he’s drinking again, “You’ll be back in jail.”
