Rural resident reports attempted mail theft

Maries County Sheriff’s Lt. Scott John said at 3:25 p.m. that a white Ford F150 alleged to be attempting to steal mail from a mailbox located along Highway 28 West is still at large.
“We had a report from a lady that when she went out to get her mail, a white Ford F150 was at her mailbox and it was apparent to her that he tried to steal her mail.”
John said the vehicle description the woman gave was familiar to his department, and that they have had other dealings with the person before.
“We are going to keep an eye out for the vehicle and see if we can make contact with them and see what they are up to,” John said.
While the sheriff’s deputies continue to keep an eye out, they ask residence to do the same, as theft tends to increase during the Christmas and holiday season.
“I thought it was a good opportunity to remind people, especially this time of year, to be vigilant,” John said.
If someone does see the vehicle described, John said not to make contact.
“I wouldn’t say call us every time you see a White Ford F150,” John said. “But if you see suspicious activity, call, and we will check it out.”
John asked reporting parties to try to get a license plate number if they do see something, but reminded citizens not to approach the person or vehicle.
