WASHINGTON — Running the floor.

That was the goal Monday night for Ryan Flanagan’s Owensville Dutchgirls in their 2020-21 season opener on the road against St. Francis Borgia’s Lady Knights.

Going into the locker room with a 35-30 halftime lead, OHS doubled up Borgia 22-11 in the third quarter before going to on defeat the host Lady Knights by a final score of 71-55.

“We’ll take this any day of the week,” Flanagan said. “We were able to wear them down in the second half with our ball pressure along with speeding up the pace of the game.”

Trailing 4-0 in the opening minute of the game, Owensville answered with an 8-0 run highlighted by five points from Kyla Hendrix in addition to a 3-pointer from freshman Emma Daniels.

Later in the quarter, the Dutchgirls found themselves trailing 16-12 with 1:51 for the opening period.

Ending the opening eight minutes on a 6-0 run, a pair of Anna Finley baskets and a Landry Watson bucket helped Owensville to an 18-16 lead over Borgia going into the second quarter in Washington.

Down 22-20 with 5:30 left in the first half, Daniels put the Dutchgirl offense on her shoulders.

Catching fire at the same time, Daniels scored Owensville’s next 13 points helping the Dutchgirls to a 33-26 lead at the 2:40 mark of the second quarter.

Another Finley bucket with 1:11 for the half gave OHS a 35-30 lead going to the locker room.

Looking to keep the lead in the second half, Owensville got points in the third quarter from seven different Dutchgirls.

Scoring the first seven points of the second half, OHS got four of those from Finley, two from Anna Skornia and a free throw from Kyla Hendrix.

Leading 42-33 with 5:03 for the quarter, Owensville outscored the Lady Knights 15-5 the rest of the period to take a 57-41 lead into the fourth quarter at Borgia.

Daniels (4) Keira Hendrix (3), Kate Angell (3) and Watson (2) also contributed points in the third quarter.

“Everybody has to be involved in the scoring column for us to be successful,” Flanagan said. “I think we’re very capable of that. We’re very deep and athletic.”

Playing the fourth quarter to a 14-14 deadlock, Owensville left Franklin County with their first notch in the win column.

“I’m proud of my kids,” Flanagan said. “They played well. They deserved this win tonight.”

Marking her Dutchgirl high school basketball debut, Daniels led Owensville with a team-high 25 points.

Close behind her was Finley just missing a triple double finishing with 23 points, nine steals and six assists.

Keira Hendrix and Kyla Hendrix were next in the scoring column with six points apiece.

Scoring four points each for OHS were Angell and Watson.

Skornia rounded out the Dutchgirl scoring with three points.

Borgia’s Kaitlyn Patke led all scorers and rebounders with a game-high double double of 31 points and 12 rebounds.

Losing the Marquette Tournament next week, Owensville’s next action will be Saturday, Dec. 5 at home against Jefferson City.
