Opening their season Friday night at home, Vienna Eagle basketball teams coached by Greg Koetting and Chandler Harker looked to put a notch in the win column in front of the home fans against Fatima’s Comets.

Falling behind 22-8 after one quarter, Vienna could not overcome a barrage of three-point shooting by the visiting Comets before falling 72-42 to their Osage County opponents.

Seeing Fatima hit five three-point shots in the first quarter, Vienna could only counter with eight points led by four markers from sophomore center Trey Snodgrass.

Tyler Collins and Bayrd VanScoy both added two points each in the opening eight minutes from Vienna High School.

Edged 18-12 by Fatima to close the first half, Koetting’s Eagles went into halftime trailing the visiting Comets 40-20.

Snodgrass paced the Eagles with a team-high 10 points in the first half.

VanScoy and Daniel Casey each added four first-half points.

Brett Werner led Fatima and all scorers with 18 first-half points for the Comets.

In spite of Vienna nearly doubling their first-half point total in the third quarter, Fatima answered with 24 points to take a 64-35 lead into the final eight minutes from Maries County.

Edged 8-7 in the final eight minutes, the host Eagles came up on the short end of a 72-42 final score.

Snodgrass led the Eagles in a losing cause with a team-high 16 points followed in double figures by 11 points from VanScoy with seven of those coming in the third quarter.

Daniel Casey and Collins each kicked in four points for Vienna while Josh Casey scored all three of his points in the fourth quarter.

Nathan Kleffner and Landon Parmeley each had two points in the third quarter to round out the scoring for the Eagles.

Werner led four Comets in double figures with a game-high 30 points.

Joining Werner in double digits for Fatima was Nate Brandt with 13 points followed by 10 markers each from Lee Verslues and Jacob Vanderfeltz.

Vienna JV vs. Fatima

Fresh off the recently-completed eighth-grade basketball season, Vienna JV Eagle head coach Chandler Harker looked to open his latest season on a winning note against Fatima’s JV Comets.

Going into the fourth quarter down 39-38, Vienna’s JV Eagles were right in the game against the visiting Fatima JV Comets.

Outscored 17-12 in the final seven minutes, Vienna dropped a hard-fought JV contest to Fatima, 56-50.

Five different Eagles scored in a first quarter that ended in a 12-12 tie.

Layne Hogshooter showed the way with four first-quarter points followed by two points each from Lucas Magner, Spencer Magner, Daniel Casey and Nicholas Collins.

Nearly doubled up 16-9 in the second quarter, Vienna suddenly found themselves trailing Fatima at halftime by a score of 28-21.

Hogshooter led Vienna in the first half with six points followed closely with five from Collins.

Third-quarter action saw the JV Eagles heat up in front of their home fans. Outscoring Fatima 17-11 to start the second half, Vienna trimmed the JV Comets’ halftime lead to one at 39-38 going into the fourth quarter.

Lucas Magner led the offensive charge for Vienna with eight third-quarter points. Hogshooter doubled his first-half point total with six markers in the third quarter. A pair of Spencer Magner free throws and a Nicholas Collins free throw rounded out Vienna’s third-quarter scoring.

Unable to match Fatima point-for-point in the fourth quarter, Vienna’s JV Eagles came up just short dropping a 56-50 decision to the Fatima JV Comets.

Lucas Magner and Hogshooter each put in 12 points to share team-high scoring honors for Vienna.

Netting eight points in the second half, Spencer Magner made it three Eagles in double figures with 10 points.

Nicholas Collins scored five of his six points in the first half. He was followed in scoring by Max Steffen who scored all four of his points in the fourth quarter.

Josh Casey, Daniel Casey and Landon Kloeppel each added two points rounding out the scoring for Vienna’s JV Eagles against Fatima.

Cooper Kleffner led the JV Comets and all scorers with a game-high 18 points. Blake Gentges also reached double figures for Fatima with 16 points.
