Spreading virus prompts Maries R-1 to close for a week

The Maries R-1 School District on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 22, said it will close the school for students on Oct. 23 and it will remain closed for at least one week.

The alert went out to district patrons who have signed up to receive the text messages from the school district. The closure was prompted as a safety measure due to an increase in positive Covid-19 test results. With people testing positive and close contacts within the student body and staff, the Phelps-Maries Health Department recommends the school close on Friday. It will remain closed for a week.

The school and the health department will reevaluate the length of the closure next week. The school posted on its Facebook page that students will continue with virtual classes and activities during this closure time. For pick up meals for students during this closure, contact Amy Rowden at 422-3240. Meals must be ordered in advance for planning and preparation.

“We are sorry for the inconvenience that this causes our families and community but it was necessary to get a handle on the health and safety of our students and staff,” the post said.

More details will be released as they become available and in next Wednesday's (Oct. 28) edition of The Advocate.
