To the Editor:

Last Tuesday night, on national TV, Donald Trump exposed himself. If that statement of character revelation happens to also suggest an obscene display the crossover is not uncalled for. With the nation tuning in the debate to assess the positions of the two candidates, in what may be the most important election of our time, Mr. Trump turned the occasion into an assault on Mr. Biden, the moderator Chris Wallace, the agreed upon rules of the debate, common decency and the truth. Viewers couldn’t stomach the chaotic display and abandoned their TV sets in waves. Instead of flummoxing his opponent, Mr. Trump proved the Democrat’s ability to focus and maintain his demeanor under severe stress. It was a miscalculation as self-serving and ill conceived as his failure to prepare the nation for the COVID pandemic and it’s economic repercussions. Following on the heels of his tax records showing large debt accrued through bad business decisions Mr. Trump appears to be little more than a grinning con man trying to feign confidence and stay one bad check ahead of those he has victimized. Desperate to maintain even “friends in low places” he refused to denounce White supremacist organizations and when pressed offered the slogan, “Stand back and stand by,” to the Proud Boys group. As he has held open the possibility that he won’t accept a losing vote, this only appears to promise more mayhem ahead in Mr. Trump’s wake.

His term in office has been divisive, deceitful, mean-spirited, unprincipled, petty, uninformed, confused, and deadly. His manner of conducting the office of the President of the United States has been an obscenity. He may have fooled people for a while, but surely now we have seen enough, way too much, of the nakedly deficient Donald Trump.
