Tiger freshmen tame St. James

After seeing their varsity and junior varsity open their respective seasons with losses at New Haven last Tuesday, Belle’s Tiger freshman looked to open their season on a winning note.

Venturing into Phelps County to face St. James’ freshmen Tigers Monday night, Jacob Walton’s Belle Tigers turned a 32-21 halftime lead into a 54-35 victory on the road in their season opener.

Escaping the first quarter with a 12-10 lead, JJ Brown helped Belle’s Tigers with eight points in the opening seven points to go along with two each from Cole Loughridge and Sam Willis.

More than tripling their point total in the second quarter, Belle went into halftime with a 32-21 lead over the host Tigers from St. James.

Kameron Newton took over lead scoring duties with eight second-quarter points.

Brown led Belle with 11 first-half points followed by Newton’s eight.

Talyn Litton and Isaiah Sullinger each added four points for Belle in the first half.

Limiting St. James to seven points in both the third and fourth quarters, Belle expanded upon their halftime lead before pulling away for a season-opening win on the road in Phelps County.

Newton and Brown each tossed in 13 points to lead Belle while Isaiah Sullinger just missed double digits in scoring with eight points.

Kaden Robertson followed closely with seven points in addition to four each from Litton, Loughridge and Willis.

A second-quarter free throw from Gunner Schlottog for one point rounded out Belle’s scoring.

Belle’s freshmen will host Owensville next Tuesday, Dec. 10 starting at 5 p.m., before the JV and Varsity Tigers take on Newburg’s Wolves at Belle High School immediately following Highway 28 freshmen action between the Dutchmen and Tigers.
