VHS Band takes first at festival

The Vienna High School marching band may be small but year after year the band continues to excel at marching festivals.

The 30-member band recently competed in the Sullivan Marching Festival and captured first place in its class. Band Director Ray Spiller said the band brought home the trophy in the parade where the band competed in the white class. They defeated Linn and New Haven. Spiller said New Haven has been the band’s rival for many years.

Also, based on scores, the VHS Band captured third place overall of the total of seven bands in all classes.

This year the band’s parade music was The Latin Parade Sequence. The music is a combination of the songs Oye Coma Va by Santana, Low Rider by War, and Evil Ways by Santana. Spiller said the senior band members selected the song and the entire band worked hard on it. “They’re a hard working group,” he commented.

During the parade the band was judged on marching, music, general effect and flag corps.

Carter Hayes is the drum major who leads the band in the parade. The flag corps members are Gabby Wilkinson, Kayce Moreland, and Madeline Novak.
