Seeing action for the first time in a week since the Tipton Tournament, Greg Koetting’s Vienna Eagle basketball team welcomed Laquey’s Hornets to Maries County for homecoming Friday night.

Holding the visiting Hornets to nine first-half points, Vienna went on to defend their home court with a 55-36 homecoming victory over the visitors from Laquey.

Pacing the Eagles with 10 first-half points, Bayrd VanScoy paced the Vienna offense with a team-high 19 points.

Trey Snodgrass and Nathan Kleffner each just missed double digit scoring putting in nine points apiece.

Tyler Collins scored six of his seven points in the second half while Layne Hogshooter netted all six of his points in the second quarter.

Landon Parmeley rounded out the scoring for the Eagles against Laquey with five points.

Chandler Harker’s junior varsity Eagles hit the floor first against Laquey’s JV Hornets.

In a virtual carbon copy of the varsity contest, the Eagles turned a 28-7 halftime lead into a 53-20 victory.

Spencer Magner led a balanced scoring attack with nine points followed closely by Daniel Casey with eight second-quarter points.

Netting seven points apiece for the victorious JV Eagles were Josh Casey and Hogshooter.

Adding six points each were Max Steffen and Tyler Gerstacker.

Lucas Magner kicked in four points to go along with two points each from Nicholas Collins, Colin John and Landon Kloeppel.

The night prior to homecoming festivities at the Eagles’ nest, Jason Kampeter’s Vienna Lady Eagles welcomed Laquey’s Lady Hornets to Maries County Thursday night.

Scoring nearly double digits in each quarter, Vienna went on to post their second win of the season with a 48-34 victory.

Kadence George led the Lady Eagles with a game-high double double of 23 points and 17 rebounds.

Kamryn Hayes joined the double double club with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Autumn Smith nearly duplicated Hayes’ numbers with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Terra Huffman added five points to round out the Vienna scoring.

In spite of not landing in the scoring column, Jada Kleffner made her impact felt on the defensive side of the ball.

“Jada (Kleffner) played great defense limiting one of their better players to two points,” Kampeter said.

Kleffner finished with six assists and two steals for the Lady Eagles.

In a two-quarter JV game, Vienna defeated Laquey 11-2 behind five points from Huffman along with four markers from Kyleigh Logan. Tori Schulte added two points for Vienna’s JV Lady Eagles.

Last Wednesday night in Steelville, Harker’s JV Eagles took on Cuba in first-round action at the Steelville JV Boys Basketball Tournament in southern Crawford County.

Leading by double digits 26-16 at halftime, Vienna gradually added to their lead in the second half of a 53-39 win over the Wildcats.

Spencer Magner led the JV Eagles with 21 points followed also in double figures by Steffen with 12 points.

With that win, Vienna advances to tonight’s (Wednesday) championship game against the host JV Cardinals at Steelville High School with a 6:45 p.m., tip off.

Closing out the 2019 portion of the season, Vienna’s Lady Eagles will play on the road at Dixon on Thursday, Dec. 19 while their Eagle counterparts will host Linn’s Wildcats on Friday, Dec. 20 with a 6 p.m., tip off for junior varsity action.
