COLUMBIA — A place on the gym wall and in the Vienna High School history books.

That is what David Martin’s Vienna Eagle cross country team secured following their fourth-place team finish after the Class 1 boys race was completed Friday morning at the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Cross Country Championships at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia.

Vienna was led by senior Duncan Wilkinson’s 13th-place time of 17:29.60.

46th after 1,000 kilometers, Wilkinson picked off 20 runners to move up to 26th after 2,000 kilometers before winding up in 13th place when he cross the finish line.

“I’m so proud of Duncan for capping his Vienna High School cross country career with a state medal,” Martin said. “He was a big part of our team this fall and his leadership will be tough to replace next year.”

Joining Wilkinson in the top 30 and on the medal stand was junior Cooper Auten with a 17th-place time of 17:32.80.

Like his senior teammate, Auten started outside of the top 30 sitting in 37th after 1,000 kilometers.

Passing 16 runners over the next 1,000 kilometers, Auten stayed around the top 20 throughout the remainder of the race.

Freshman Hunter Schwartze nearly made it a trio of Eagles on the medal stand.

Sitting in 56th after 1,000 kilometers, Schwartze passed 21 runners to move into 35th after 2,000 kilometers.

Only able to pass a few more runners, the Eagle freshman posted a 33rd-place time of 17:59.10 in his first state meet.

Senior Brayden Ewers started his race in 66th after 1,000 kilometers. After that, Ewers passed 17 runners before crossing the finish line in a 49th-place time of 18:17.50.

Fellow senior Jackson Kilmer helped Vienna seal the deal on their fourth-place team trophy with a 129th-place time of 20:06.80.

“We would not be where we are without our seniors,” Martin said. “Brayden and Jackson both ran solid races helping us into the top four of the team standings capping a historic day.”

Gavin Schwartze (143rd, 20:35.20) and Thomas Douglas (156th, 21:13.40) rounded out the Vienna Eagle cross country contingency at state.

Placing eighth as a team last fall, the Eagles finished with a team score of 130 points edging McAuley Catholic (136) for the final team hardware spot.

Vienna finished fourth in the team standings behind now three-time defending state champion Hermitage (74), Van Buren (97) and Oak Ridge (127).

Chamois’ Pirates also qualified for state cross country as a team in Class 1 placing 14th with 335 team points.
