Edging the host Lady Lions 6-5 in the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) Class 1, District 2 semifinals at Crocker High School, Mick Byrd’s Vienna Eagle softball team advanced to Friday’s championship game against the top-seeded Stoutland Lady Tigers.

Unable to sustain the momentum from the semifinal victory over Crocker, Vienna saw their season end at 17-4 following a 10-3 loss to Stoutland in the district championship game.

Stoutland will advance to sectional softball action tonight (Wednesday) against Norwood’s Lady Pirates on the road with a 5 p.m., first pitch.

Leading the charge for Vienna against Stoutland in the district title game was Karissa Feeler with three hits and four stolen bases.

Kadence George added two hits, two runs batted in (RBI) and a stole base.

Jada Kleffner and Molly Otto each had base hits while Gabby Wilkinson, Marsie Messersmith and Andrea Novak each stole a base.

Taking the season-ending loss, Messersmith allowed seven earned runs on 11 hits and three walks. She also struck out seven Lady Tigers.

“The last loss always stings,” Byrd said. “Ellie and I are proud of how hard our kids competed all season. We want to recognize our two awesome seniors Jena Schwartze and Kamryn Hayes along with our injured teammate Lexi Struemph.”

In their 6-5 win over Crocker, Vienna trailed 3-0 after a half inning before scoring five runs in the bottom of the first inning.

An additional tally mark in the bottom of the second inning turned out to be the game winner.

Alicia Long recorded a double and single to go along with a RBI.

Kadence George tripled, singled and stole a base, while Otto cleared the bases with a double in Vienna’s five-run first inning.

Hayes and Kleffner added a hit while Feeler also drove in a run for Vienna.

Messersmith picked up the win against Crocker giving up just two earned runs on three hits and five walks. She also reached double digits in strikeouts with 11 against Crocker.

A fifth-inning highlight saw Terra Huffman throw out the potential tying run.
