Winning two of three games over the weekend at the Eugene Tournament, Nic Lovell’s Vienna Eagle fall baseball team returned home Monday night to Vienna City Park taking on Bourbon’s Warhawks.

Leading 5-0 after three innings, Vienna plated 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning of their 16-1 mercy-rule victory over Bourbon.

Levi Messersmith and Dylan Buschmann both singled to start the bottom of the first inning Monday against the Warhawks.

Two pitches later, Sutton Hauck delivered a two-RBI double putting Vienna on the board.

Helping his own cause, starting pitcher Nathan Kleffner lifted an RBI single to left field scoring Hauck for a 3-0 Eagle lead after one inning.

Retiring Bourbon in order in the top of the second inning, Kleffner allowed his Eagle offense to go back to work in the bottom half of the second.

Bayrd Vanscoy and AJae Schell singled with one out before scoring on errors pushing Vienna’s lead to 5-0 after two innings.

After a scoreless third inning, both teams put runs on the board in the fourth frame.

Bourbon turned two hits into a run to break up Kleffner’s bid for a shutout trimming the Eagle lead to 5-1 moving to the bottom of the fourth inning.

Sending 14 batters to the plate, Vienna pushed across 11 runs on seven hits, two walks and two Warhawk errors.

Highlighting the 11-run fourth inning was a two-run home run over the center-field fence off the bat of Eagle third baseman Trenton Rowden.

Hauck paced the Eagle offense with two hits, two runs scored and four runs batted in (RBI). Messersmith also scored three runs and drove in three RBIs on one hit and a walk.

Buschmann added three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Kleffner also earned the complete-game victory allowing a run on two hits and a walk to go with four strikeouts.

Over the weekend at the Eugene Tournament, Vienna dropped the opening game to the host Eagles 9-0 Friday.

In their second game Friday against Pilot Grove’s Tigers, Vienna fell behind 5-1 before scoring eight unanswered runs to post a 9-5 victory in Eugene.

Saturday’s game at Eugene against New Bloomfield saw Vienna hold off a late Wildcat rally for a 10-8 win giving them a 2-1 record for the tournament.
