For Vienna Cross Country coach David Martin, his Eagles and Lady Eagles finally got to open their season last Wednesday on their home course in the annual Vienna Cross Country Invitational at Vienna City Park.

Starting the day of racing in central Maries County was the middle school boys.

Vienna had only two runners in the race with one of them earning a medal.

Lawson Magner  placed third in a time of 10:16.8 while his teammate Eli Crum placed 57th in 21:46.0

Bland’s Bears had a full team competing in Vienna led by Garrett Gehlert’s 10th-place time of 10:52.6.

Also helping Bland (91) finish fourth as a team behind Southern Boone (24), New Bloomfield (52) and Chamois (62) were Landon Finn (33rd, 12:41.5), Hank Stratman (38th, 13:07.8), Kaegan Kinsey (45th, 14:30.6) and Avery Craigmiles (52nd, 16:40.9).

Saturday in Linn, Bland placed eighth out of 11 teams with 229 points.

In the middle school girls race, Vienna had four racers competing led by Aubrey Reeves who placed fourth in a time of 11:13.2.

Other VMS Lady Eagle harriers competing included Marissa Hollis (29th, 14:44.6), Payton Martin (30th, 15:08.2) and Ava Kloeppel (31st, 15:13.4)

Bland’s Lady Bears also had four runners competing. This left them and Vienna one shy of enough runners to have a team score.

Bland was led by Tajel McDaniel’s 14th-place time of 12:32.6.

Other Lady Bears running for Jacob Walton’s squad were Cylee Reed (23rd, 13:38.8), Aubrey Rehmert (32nd, 15:24.7) and Piper Marsee (36th, 16:05.6).

Southern Boone also topped the middle school boy’s team standings with 24 points followed by Dixon (50), Stoutland (93), New Bloomfield (96) and Russellville (101).

Starting the high school portion of racing with the junior varsity boys, odds were good of earning a medal with the top 10 earning one among the 13 racers.

Maries County harriers had three runners in the top six led by freshman Baylar Smith with a winning time of 21:04.1.

Vienna’s Duncan Wilkinson followed with a second-place time of 21:39.2 along with fellow Eagle teammate Kamden George finishing sixth in 25:14.6.

Nearly making it a trio of Eagles in the medals, Jackson Kilmer finished 12th in 30:35.5 just over a minute out of the top 10.

Vienna’s varsity girls fielded a full team with two runners keeping medals in town.

Senior Gabby Wilkinson placed 10th in 24:39.0 while fellow Lady Eagle Cameren Doyel posted a 15th-place time of 25:15.9.

Other Vienna (76) harriers helping the Lady Eagles to a fourth-place team finish behind Southern Boone (26), Chamois (52) and Russellville (60) were Andrea Novak (29th, 30:38.0), Kiera Hollis (33rd, 32:59.5) and Jillian Fick (36th, 33:33.2).

Belle also had a trio of girls competing in the varsity race led by freshman Natalie Gehlert placing 14th in 25:05.3.

Nevaeh Kinsey grabbed the next to last medal with a 19th place time of 26:19.1 while Emma White finished 41st in 43:38.0

Of the 49 runners in the varsity boy’s race, only two hailed from Maries County.

However, both of them finished within the top eight to earn medals.

Belle’s Cory McDaniel placed sixth in 19:08.7 while Vienna senior Caleb Horman took eighth in a time of 19:58.4.

In the varsity boy’s team standings, New Bloomfield and Russellville both scored 65 points.

New Bloomfield’s sixth runner finished higher than Russellville’s to break the tie and give the Wildcats first place.

Finishing behind New Bloomfield and Russellville were Southern Boone (74), Stover (80), South Callaway (90) and California (94).

Saturday at Linn, three county runners left the Osage County Fairgrounds with medals.

Reeves led Vienna with a 16th-place time of 14:46.15 in the middle school girls race while Magner paced the VMS boys with a 12th-place time of 12:53.36.

Smith added to his victory at Vienna with a 19th-place time of 22:00.77 in the junior varsity boys race at Linn.

Also at Linn, Bland’s Lady Bears finished seventh out of 12 teams with 183 points. Ava Feeler was the team’s newest runner placing 48th in 16:25.20.

Vienna’s next cross country action for both high school and middle school will be this Saturday in Mokane at the South Callaway Cross Country Invitational.

Belle’s next cross country competition will be in Crawford County at the annual Steelville Cross Country Invitational held tomorrow (Thursday).
