After seeing their Lady Eagle counterparts defeated by Chamois, Greg Koetting’s Vienna Eagles looked to split the varsity portion of their season-opening twin bill last Tuesday with a win over the host Pirates.

Nursing a 38-37 lead going into the fourth quarter, Vienna was edged 15-14 in the final eight minutes by Chamois to force overtime after ending regulation tied at 52-52.

Shutting out the Pirates 7-0 in the four-minute overtime, Vienna evened their record at 1-1 on the young season with a 59-52 victory along Highway 89 in Osage County.

Seeing both teams finish the first quarter in single digits, Vienna led Chamois 9-6 behind five points from Nathan Kleffner and four more from Trey Snodgrass.

Nipped 17-15 in the second quarter by the Pirates, Koetting’s Eagles went into halftime with a slim 24-23 lead.

Kleffner doubled his first-quarter point total giving him 10 points for the first half. Layne Hogshooter hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter putting in six first-half markers.

Opening the second half with a 14-14 stalemate in the third quarter, four Eagles helped Vienna keep their one-point lead in Snodgrass (6), Kleffner (5), Daniel Casey (2) and Landon Parmeley (1).

Edged 15-14 in the final eight minutes, Chamois and Vienna ended regulation tied at 52-52 before heading to a four-minute overtime.

Kleffner led the Eagles with six fourth-quarter points while Bayrd VanScoy scored his first two points of the game during the final eight minutes.

Holding Chamois scoreless in the extra session, Vienna got their seven points from VanScoy (5) and Kleffner (2) to help the Eagles into the win column.

Netting a baker’s dozen in the second half, Kleffner poured in a game-high 23 points leading Vienna while Chamois’ Nate Nolting matched Kleffner with 23 points of his own for the Pirates.

Snodgrass joined Kleffner in double figures scoring eight of his 14 points in the second half for Vienna.

Just missing double digits for the Eagles were Hogshooter (8) and VanScoy (7).

Along with their Lady Eagle counterparts, Koetting’s Eagles are also competing in the 81st Annual Tipton Boys Basketball Tournament.

First-round action last night (Tuesday) for the fourth-seeded Eagles saw them face Chamois’ Pirates for the second time in a week.

A second victory over Chamois would advance the Eagles to the championship semifinals at Tipton tomorrow (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m., while a loss to the Pirates would drop them to the consolation side of the bracket tomorrow (Thursday) at 4:30 p.m., against the loser of top-seeded Smithton and eighth-seeded La Monte.
