Hitting the road into Iron County last Monday night, Vienna’s Lady Eagle and Eagle basketball teams looked to sweep a Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) doubleheader from the host Viburnum Blue Jays and Lady Blue Jays.

Coached by Jason Kampeter, Vienna’s Lady Eagles looked to open GVC play on the right note.

Building up a 30-17 halftime lead on the Lady Blue Jays, Vienna survived a second-half rally by Viburnum before holding on for a 46-44 victory.

During the first eight minutes, Jena Schwartze fired in 11 of Vienna’s 18 first-quarter points giving the Lady Eagles the early lead on the road.

Doubling up the Lady Blue Jays 12-6 in the second quarter, Five different Lady Eagles found the scoring column helping Vienna to their aforementioned halftime lead.

Seeing Viburnum put 14 points on the board in the third quarter, Autumn Smith scored all four points to open the second half for Vienna helping them hold on to a 34-31 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Able to overcome a 6-12 effort from the free-throw line in the final eight minutes, the Lady Eagles held on to win their GVC opener.

Autumn Smith and Schwartze shared game-high scoring honors leading Vienna with 13 points each.

Both also finished with double doubles seeing Schwartze pull down 11 rebounds and Smith grab 10 boards.

Kamryn Hayes went a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe helping her score seven points against the Lady Blue Jays.

Kadence George added five points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

Jada Kleffner followed closely with four points in addition to two points apiece from Tera Huffman and Kylie Logan.

Seeing their Lady Eagle counterparts defeat the Lady Blue Jays, Koetting’s Eagles looked to complete the sweep in Viburnum.

Lighting up the scoreboard with 50 first-half points, Vienna easily completed the GVC doubleheader sweep with a 78-34 victory over the host Blue Jays.

In a balanced scoring attack, all 10 Vienna Eagles in uniform at Viburnum scored at least two points.

Layne Hogshooter led the visiting Eagles with a game-high 17 points with 11 of those in the first half.

Tyler Collins and Trey Snodgrass both added 14 points making it a trio of double-digit scorers for Vienna. Both players also did most of their damage in the first half netting 12 points each.

Bayrd VanScoy nearly made it four Eagles in double figures scoring all nine of his points in Vienna’s 50-point first half.

Spencer Magner followed closely with eight points in addition to seven points from Lucas Magner.

Daniel Casey scored all three of his points in the fourth quarter in addition to the trio of Max Steffen, Josh Casey and Landon Parmeley each putting in two points rounding out Vienna’s scoring against Viburnum.

Four nights later for the Lady Eagles, they once again hit the road this time to Jefferson City facing Calvary Lutheran Friday night.

Carrying a 35-25 lead into the fourth quarter, Vienna nearly saw it disappear in the end before holding on for a 42-40 victory in the first game of another varsity twinbill.

George posted a team-high double double for Vienna of 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Marsie Messersmith just missed double digits with nine points for the Lady Eagles.

Smith also grabbed 12 rebounds in addition to 10 boards for Schwartze.

Leading 15-13 after one quarter in the boys contest, Vienna could not complete the sweep falling to the Lions 70-59.

Nathan Kleffner led the Eagles with 16 points.
