Opening 2020 with a 51-43 loss at Newburg last Tuesday, Greg Koetting’s Vienna Eagles went into their Friday night home showdown with the Class 1, sixth-ranked St. Elizabeth Hornets.

Dropping a 74-47 decision to the visiting Hornets, Vienna will look break into the win column for 2020 this week at the South Callaway Boys Basketball Tournament up in Mokane.

Entering the tournament as the sixth seed, Vienna opened play last night (Tuesday) with a first-round showdown against New Haven’s Shamrocks in the South Callaway High School gym.

A win last night would keep them in the high school the rest of the tournament on the winner’s side of the bracket while a loss would send them to the consolation side of the bracket at South Callaway Middle School.

Regardless of last night’s outcome, Vienna will play at 7:30 p.m., tomorrow (Thursday) night.

If the Eagles stay on the winner’s side of the bracket, they would play on Saturday either in the third-place game at 2:30 p.m., or in the championship game at 5:30 p.m., both in the SCHS gym.

A loss to New Haven would mean Vienna’s third tournament game would either be in the seventh-place game at 7:30 p.m., on Friday in the SCMS gym or in the consolation championship game also on Friday at 7:30 p.m., in the SCHS gym.

Following their stay at the South Callaway Tournament, Vienna will move right into the 58th Annual Iberia Invitational  Boys Basketball Tournament to be held from Tuesday, Jan. 21 until Friday, Jan. 24.

With only six teams in the tournament, they will be split into two pools of three.

Pool one will consist of Iberia, Russellville and Tuscumbia while Pool two will include Dixon, Vienna and the Iberia JV squad.

Vienna will kick off their portion of the tournament on Tuesday, Jan. 21 taking on Dixon’s Bulldogs at 6 p.m., on Highway 42 at Iberia High School.

Koetting’s Eagles will conclude pool play on Thursday, Jan. 23 taking on Iberia’s JV Rangers at approximately 7:30 p.m., following the previous game between Russellville and Tuscumbia.

Depending upon how the Eagles fare in pool play, Vienna will play on Friday, Jan. 24 at either 5 p.m., for the consolation championship, 6:30 p.m., for third place or for the tournament championship at 8 p.m.
