Vienna’s Mayor Jeremy Smith set to resign

VIENNA — Vienna Mayor Jeremy Smith is scheduled to resign at the end of September. He and his family are moving to New Bloomfield and he no longer will be eligible to hold the city’s leadership role.

Smith, who is in his first term as Vienna Mayor, said he sincerely regrets having to resign as mayor but due to a change in his wife’s work role, it became necessary for their family to move closer to her work.

“I have enjoyed my years on the city council and my time as mayor,” he said. “Vienna has seen many improvements and I am confident that the city will continue to improve with the guidance of the current council and acting mayor. Thank you for the opportunity to serve and the experiences I have gained while serving.”

The council, at a past meeting, appointed South Ward Alderwoman Brenda Davis to serve as mayor in the absence of the mayor and at the council’s September meeting Monday night, she served in that capacity. City Clerk Sherry James said the council may appoint an individual to serve as mayor until the April 2020 election. To be Vienna’s mayor, a person is required to have lived in the city for at least one year, be at least 25 years old, and have no criminal history. Interested persons should contact city hall.
