Virgel Earl Parker, 75, of Dixon, passed away Thursday, Jan. 4, 2024, at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.

He was born March 4, 1948, to Clarence Allen and Rosie Fern (Murry) Parker  in Waynesville.

He was united in marriage to Janet French, March 7, 1971.

Virgel graduated from Dixon High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in Aug. 1966, serving on the Grasp ARS24 (Amphibious Rescue Ship) until 1967. During that time, they towed barges from Guam to Vietnam and did routine diving operations along the coast. He later served in the Seabees building military bases along the river in the wetlands from 1968 until his discharge from active duty on Nov. 7, 1969. Virgel joined the reserves in 1975, honorably serving until his retirement on Sept. 30, 1993.

Virgel founded Parker Equipment in 1988, continuing operations until his recent health decline. He was a member of Dixon Assembly of God Church.

He was preceded in death by parents, Clarence and Rosie; brothers, Jimmy Parker and Richard Parker; and brother-in-law, Larry Blanchard.

He is survived by wife, Janet of the home; sons, Brad (Jenny) Parker and Steven (Stacie) Parker; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Bobbie (Nancy) Parker and Roy (Kyong) Parker; and sisters, Virginia Blanchard and Doris (Bill) Howser.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 8, at Dixon Assembly of God Church. Interment with military honors was held in Dixon City Cemetery.

Memorials suggested to the Dixon Assembly of God Church Camp Fund.
