Hitting the road for the first time Thursday night, Mick Byrd’s Vienna Warthog softball team ventured west on Highway 42 to take on Iberia’s Rangers.

Limiting the Lady Ranger offense to one run, the Warthogs improved to 2-0 on the summer season with a 6-1 victory during varsity action in Miller County.

Karissa Feeler led the Vienna offense with a double, single, two runs batted in (RBI) and a stolen base. Jada Kleffner also doubled for the Warthogs.

Collecting a hit each for Vienna against Iberia was Marsie Messersmith, Molly Otto, Alicia Long, Gabby Wilkinson and Kadence George.

Messersmith added a RBI while Otto and George each stole a base.

Terra Huffman earned an RBI executing a suicide squeeze bunt whole Andrea Novak swiped a pair of bases and scored two runs.

Rhea Helton also stole a base in varsity action.

Messersmith threw all six innings in the pitching circle allowing no runs on a hit with no walks and 12 strikeouts.

Iberia took the junior varsity portion of the doubleheader defeating the Warthogs, 6-0.

Tori Schulte had a hit and a stolen base while Abrea Simmons recorded the lone extra-base hit with a double.

Helton also stole two bases giving her three for the twin bill.

According to Byrd, the defensive highlight of the night was Huffman and Novak combining to catch a runner trying to steal a base for a Warthog first of the season.

Simmons pitched two innings in the JV game allowing four earned runs on four hits and two walks to go with four strikeouts.

Eva Hollis also threw two innings without allowing a run on a hit with no walks and a strikeout.

Due to forecasted heavy rain and thunderstorms in the area Monday night, Vienna’s game in Linn scheduled for that night was postponed to tomorrow (Thursday) night in Linn with a 6 p.m., first pitch.
