Work began last week on the track facility at Maries R-1 School in Vienna.
The school’s 300-meter track, located just east of the school campus, has been in poor condition for several years. It was so bad that some schools refused to allow their athletes to come to Vienna for track meets.
Byrne & Jones Sports Construction, St. Louis, has been contracted to do the work on the track. The company will dig up the existing track and will mill that aggregate and put down a new, asphalt running surface. This work is expected to begin next week. After the asphalt has been laid, it will have to set for a period of time before the rubberized surface can be added to complete the work. The company also will fix drainage and other issues at the track.
The Maries R-1 School Board recently approved an addition to the work with a javelin throwing area, bringing the total cost of the project to $560,500.
