Lady Eagles tame Tuscumbia

Scheduled to play three games last week, Jason Kampeter’s Vienna Lady Eagle basketball team only got to play one of them thanks to Mother Nature’s latest blast of winter weather.

That game was last Tuesday on the road against the Tuscumbia Lady Lions.

Escaping the first quarter with a 13-12 lead, Vienna added to their lead with a 17-11 second-quarter edge for a 30-23 halftime advantage.

Nipping the Lady Lions 24-23 in the second half, Vienna snapped a five-game losing streak getting their first victory in 2020 by a final score of 54-46.

“We were able to beat a team that plays very well on their home floor,” Kampeter said.

Kadence George led Vienna and all scorers just missing a triple double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists in addition to three steals.

Kamryn Hayes must have been in a baking mood last night.

She finished with a double double of 13 points and 13 rebounds in addition to dishing out three assists.

Marsie Messersmith chipped in seven points to go along with six markers each from Autumn Smith and Jena Schwartze.

Jada Kleffner rounded out the Lady Eagle scoring with two points.

“Jada always had to defend the opposing team’s best players,” Kampeter said. “Once again, she did a great job.

Having games with Steelville and Versailles snowed out last week, Vienna will spend the upcoming week in Cole County playing in the Russellville Girls Basketball Tournament.

Facing the host Lady Indians last night (Tuesday), they could face Belle as they’re on the same half of the bracket.
