Two Tigers, two Eagles earn All-GVC Cross Country honors

BOURBON — One day removed from temperatures in the 80s, schools from the Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) competed in their annual conference cross country meet Friday afternoon with temperatures in the mid-40s.

However, that did not stop four Maries County harriers from earning All-Gasconade Valley Conference (GVC) honors at Bourbon High School.

Taking the course first while the rain stayed away from Crawford County were the varsity girls.

COVID-19 showed its presence causing a few Steelville runners to be quarantined and therefore taking them out of the team standings with only four runners.

That opened the door for Belle, Vienna and Cuba who had full teams.

Adding to her success on the softball diamond, Vienna senior Gabby Wilkinson earned All-GVC honors with a fifth-place time of 24:21.0.

Finishing eight seconds behind her was Belle freshman Natalie Gehlert with a sixth-place time of 24:29.2 also good for All-GVC accolades. Fellow Lady Tiger freshman Nevaeh Kinsey just missed an All-GVC nod with an eighth-place finish in 25:29.9.

Other county runners on the girls side included Belle’s Susie Moman (12th), Vienna’s Allia Terwilliger (14th), Belle’s Lauren Prigge (15th), Belle’s Phoebe Tibbetts (17th), Belle’s Emma White (19th), Vienna’s Jillian Fick (20th), Vienna’s Kiera Hollis (21st), Vienna’s Andrea Novak (22nd) and Belle’s Maddie Rohrer (23rd).

Cuba topped the varsity girl’s team standings with 22 points followed by Belle in second place with 42 and Vienna in third place with 59 team points.

Following racing on the varsity boy’s side, one harrier each from Belle and Vienna finished inside the top seven with five Steelville Cardinal runners.

Tuning up for his final district meet on Saturday, Vienna’s Caleb Horman broke up Steelville’s bid for a perfect score with a fifth-place time of 19:01.7 good enough for a medal and All-GVC honors.

Rounding out the top seven and list of All-GVC honorees was Belle junior Corey McDaniel with a seventh-place time of 19:26.5.

Other county runners finishing the GVC course were Belle’s Baylar Smith (11th), Vienna’s Duncan Wilkinson (14th), Belle’s Dalton McDaniel (15th), Belle’s Brayden Cadwallader (18th), Vienna’s Kamden George (19th), Vienna’s Evan Casey (20th), Vienna’s Janis Hubert (22nd) and Belle’s Taner Devine (25th).

Belle and Vienna will both compete in the respective district races Saturday in Osage County at the Linn Athletic Complex.

Belle will race at 9 a.m., for the girls and 9:40 a.m., for the boys.

Vienna will compete in the early afternoon with the Class 1 girls race at 1 p.m., followed at approximately 1:40 p.m., by the Class 1 boys race.
