Vienna fall baseball finally gets games in after numerous rain outs

With a nice stretch of dry weather in the forecast, Vienna athletic director Cory Nicholson should not have any problems getting the Vienna Fall Baseball Classic in over the upcoming weekend.

Last week, Nicholson’s Eagles were able to get five games in after having that many rained out early in the fall season.

Going 2-1 at the Eugene Baseball Bash, Vienna posted win over the host Eagles and the Prairie Home Panthers.

They will host Tuscumbia on tomorrow (Thursday) at Vienna City Park before competing in their fall baseball classic this weekend.

In Eugene Saturday against the host Eagles, Bayrd VanScoy needed 89 pitches to toss a one-hit shutout during an 8-0 victory.

Looking to break the scoreless tie in the top of the first inning, Vienna benefited from Eugene miscues.

VanScoy helped his cause leading off the game reaching on an error before scoring when Lucas Magner reached on a subsequent Eugene error.

Pitching around a walk and a dropped third strike in the bottom of the first inning, VanScoy helped Vienna keep their 1-0 lead after one inning.

After scoreless innings in the second and third, Vienna added to their lead in the top of the fourth.

Landon Kloeppel singled with one out before scoring on a VanScoy RBI single doubling Vienna’s lead to 2-0 over Eugene.

Inning number five meant another run for Vienna.

This time, Alijah Mercer drew a one-out walk before scoring later in the inning on an error bumping Vienna’s lead to 3-0.

Holding Eugene hitless and scoreless through five innings, VanScoy gave his Vienna offense a chance to add to their lead.

Deekin Wagner led the top of the sixth off with a single before scoring on a VanScoy RBI single.

Lucas Magner and Nathan Kleffner both drew walks before Mercer reached on an error and scored.

Owen Kloeppel also walked and scored in Vienna’s five-run top of the sixth inning.

Carrying a no-hitter through six innings, VanScoy saw it spoiled on a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Starting the Eugene Baseball Bash Friday night, Vienna took on New Bloomfield’s Wildcats.

Unable to overcome a pair of two-run innings early in the game, Vienna fell to the Wildcats 4-2 in the opening game of the tournament.

Kleffner allowed two earned runs on four hits to go with seven walks and five strikeouts.

He did help his cause on offense with two hits and a run batted in.

VanScoy also had a hit and a run scored along with Owen Kloeppel who had a hit and a RBI.

Lucas Magner also had two walks, a hit and a run scored against New Bloomfield.

Vienna’s second game Friday in Eugene saw them take on the Prairie Home Panthers.

Scoring six runs in the top of the first inning, the Eagles had all the offense they would need before going on to a 14-5 victory in five innings due to the tournament time limit.

Deekin Wagner led the Vienna offense with two doubles, two walks, four RBIs and a run scored.

Owen Kloeppel and Kleffner both had three hits and two runs scored while Owen also drove in three runs.

Landon Kloeppel and Lucas Magner both scored three runs for the victorious Eagles.

Before Vienna plays host to their fall baseball classic this weekend, they will host Tuscumbia’s Lions tomorrow (Thursday) night at Vienna City Park with a 5 p.m., first pitch.
